Police are in attendance in Kirkby following reports of a serious assault, this afternoon (Sunday, 10 June).

Emergency services were called to a piece of land off Bewley Drive and Valley Road at around 5.50pm to reports a woman had been assaulted. The woman was walking her dog, when she was approached by two men who attempted to steal her dog. The men assaulted the woman, slashing her to the stomach and throwing a brick or stones at her, before running off empty handed.

She has been taken to hospital where she continues to be treated for her injuries, which are not thought to be life threatening. The dog was uninjured.

CCTV from the area is being examined and house to house enquiries will be carried out.

Detective Inspector Debbie Tipton said: “This is an extremely shocking incident and at this early stage of the investigation, we are working to piece together the full circumstances.

“This must have been a terrible ordeal for the victim and I would like to ask local residents, if they saw or heard anyone acting suspiciously in this area, around the time of the incident, to get in contact. This is a busy residential area and and I’m sure the local community would agree that this type of behaviour is totally unacceptable and those responsible, need to be brought to justice.”
