A 34-year-old man from Walton has been arrested, following an incident in Bootle this morning (Saturday, 9 June).

An elderly lady attended Marsh Lane police station, to report that around 9.45am a man had pulled her from her parked car on Carolina Street, before stealing the car, a Nissan Micra. The woman was uninjured but extremely shaken.

Officers traced the stolen car and following a pursuit, managed to stop the car and arrest the man in the St Helens area. The man was arrested on suspicion of robbery was taken to a police station where he will be questioned.

Detective Inspector Craig Sumner said: “This must have been extremely frightening for the woman, to be approached at her car in broad daylight. She has been extremely brave in attending the police station straight after the incident and giving the level of detail she did, which assisted us in tracing the car and arresting the suspect so quickly.

“We have recovered the woman’s car and some personal belongings and will be returning them to her. This same man may have been near to Carolina Street, the underpass and bus station on the Strand earlier in the day, so I’d also like to take this opportunity to appeal to anyone who was in the area around the time of this incident, who witnessed this event or who have any information, to come forward and contact @MerpolCC, 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
