19 year old Shaun Bethell is tonight starting a lengthy prison sentence after being found guilty of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and possession of a dangerous weapon

Bethell. of no fixed abode, was convicted of stabbing builder Tony Turpin in the stomach at the Santa Chupitos cocktail bar in Slater Street

In sentencing Bethell to 11 years in prison with an extended four years on licence, Judge Gary Woodhall told him “I have been shown no reason for any confrontation. Given your denials and Mr Turpin’s lack of memory it is not clear to me what if any background there was to this serious act of violence.

“It appears from the CCTV to burst out of nowhere. It looks to me as if you planned for or were expecting trouble”

Bethell has a lengthy crime sheet with 83 previous convictions, one of which was for attacking his ex partner with a home made knuckle duster and making threats to kill her in 2016.

Detective Inspector Terry Davies, of Merseyside Police, said: “This was an appalling attack against a man who was simply enjoying a night out with friends in Liverpool. “There may have been some kind of altercation but Bethell has never provided an explanation as to why he carried out this extreme act of violence, which could have easily led to fatal injuries.

“Nonetheless, the victim’s injuries were appalling and it is thanks to the incredible work of medical professionals at the scene and hospital that his life was saved. But his recovery has been long and painful, and I would like to recognise his bravery in helping us with this investigation, which forced him to relive a terrible ordeal.”
