A murder investigation has been launched following an assault in Liverpool City Centre in the early hours of this morning, Saturday, 3 February 2018.

Emergency services were called shortly after 1am, following a report that a man in his 20s had been assaulted during an altercation in the Maya bar on Wood Street. The man was taken to hospital and sadly pronounced deceased at 2.24am.

He has been named as Anthony Condron aged 29 from Huyton

His family have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers at this time.

A cordon is in place while forensic enquiries and searches are carried out and CCTV and witness enquiries are ongoing.

A Home Office post mortem is due to take place later today.

Police are keen to speak to three males who were in the bar at the time and may have vital information.
One is described as a 6ft 2in white male, with brown hair, a muscular build and stubble, wearing a puffer jacket. A second male is described as white, around 20-years-old with a slim build and wearing a grey hooded jacket.

It is believed they left the premises at around 1am and headed in the direction of Fleet Street. Police urge the men, or anyone who recognises their descriptions to get in touch.

Detectives are also urgently looking to speak to anyone who saw the incident, or events leading up to it.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Tivendale said: “The incident happened in a busy bar in the centre of Liverpool and would’ve been witnessed by many people. Our investigation is in it’s very early stages but we believe an altercation has taken place inside the bar between the victim and a number of unknown males.

“I’d appeal to anyone who may have witnessed the assault, or the events leading up to it, to get in touch with us. I’d also like to appeal for anyone who may have mobile phone footage or photographs from within the Maya bar to come forward. You may have heard words being exchanged or witnessed the offenders leaving the bar. Any information could prove vital to our investigation and to identifying who was responsible and bringing them to justice.

“This was an unprovoked attack on a young male enjoying a night out with his girlfriend and friends, which has tragically resulted in the loss of his life.”

Anyone with information can call detectives on (0151) 777 4044, or 101 quoting reference 50 of 3/2/18 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555
