A man is recovering in hospital this morning following a serious assault in Upton.

Police officers were called just before 6.30pm last night to reports that a man had been assaulted by a group of six or seven men at the junction of Houghton Road and Hoole Road.

The investigation is in its early stages and at this time it is believed that the victim, a 25-year-old man from Birkenhead, was driving his car along Houghton Road when he has come into contact with another vehicle (not further described) containing six or seven men. It is understood there was an altercation between the victim and the group of men and the victim was assaulted.

It is believed that at least one of the attackers was carrying a machete. Following the attack it is believed that the offenders made off on foot and in a vehicle.

Officers who attended chased the males.

A short time later two men, both aged 40 from Bebington and Upton, were arrested on suspicion of assault and affray. They have been taken to a police station where they will questioned by detectives.

The victim, who sustained a stab wound to his back, cuts to his legs and bruising, was taken to hospital where he is being treated.

Detective Sergeant Simon Douch, from Wirral CID, said: “The investigation is very much in its early stages and we are still trying to piece together exactly what has happened. The victim has been taken to hospital where he is being treated for his injuries and this was a nasty attack. The incident has caused disruption within the local community with reports of the offenders running through peoples gardens following the attack.

“I would urge anyone who has any information which could help us find those responsible to come forward as soon as possible. The behaviour of this group is absolutely abhorrent and those responsible need to be caught, we will not let groups like this cause fear in our communities.”

Houghton Road has been closed at its junctions with Glebe Hey Road and Hoole Road whist Crime Scene Investigators carry out forensic examinations at the scene. House-to-house inquiries are being carried out an detectives are examining CCTV coverage in a bid to identify the offenders.

Anyone who has information which could help the police with their inquiries can contact Wirral CID on 0151 777 2265, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111
